Shoot!   I don’t have it anymore…  I searched today… but it is gone.  Haven’t thought of it in years.

It is the pink hardback copy of my first inscribed book- it came in 3rd grade from my mother and the book was Mary Poppins.

She wrote:

Dearest Lori,

I hope you love your books as much as I love mine.

Love, Mommy

I thought of it today after seeing a PHENOMENAL  production of Mary Poppins.   Wow, SO MANY THEMES in the songs and dialogue I never picked up as a kid:

Marriage to work instead of family (Mr. Banks)

How someone uptight (Mr. Banks) creates that uptight energy that spreads across the entire household

Giving up your identity(Mrs. Banks)  because your spouse doesn’t approve

Spoiled rotten children who run the household (not your children of course)

Love of words!  (Supercalifragilisticexpealidocious)-  It was created at the “Conversation Store” where random letters were picked and put together with Cheers of EXCITEMENT

Songwriting with such perfect rhythm, rhyme and meaning- Spoonful of Sugar, Step in Time, Feed the Birds, The Perfect Nanny, Chim Chim Cheree, Let’s Go Fly a Kite

Don’t give an invisible eye to the raggedy poor  –  they are worthy of your kindness  (Feed the Birds-The “bird lady,” feebly old and raggedy, but her presence belied the depth and tenor of her voice- it pierced into you-  this one was eye-watering)

No matter how bad your horizons look (Mr. Banks anticipates being fired),  so you lose the house, the cars, the nice clothes-  You still have your family.

The simple sweetness between Bert and Mary Poppins..  (There was a kiss on the check 2 x  and you could both hear and feel the house reaction (it was all kids- held at Sandy Springs Performing Art Center- about 900 kids).  It was “oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo” and lasted longer than the kiss.  I pondered that the boys might think it   gross, the older boys, a bit more curious-  and the girls of all ages might be dreamy and think ” will that ever be me? ” (I fell in love with Mighty Mouse at 5 so I understand the thinking!)

Such an audible response to a kiss… it was pure and adorable-

I suggest that you treat whatever children are in your world to a kite!    Treat yourself as an adult to a kite-

Flying a kite is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo magical…. when it flies…

Create those childhood memories.

Time is often so scrunchy and rushed …

What a treat when we can discard time and loose track and get lost in those moments…

The expression ‘Go fly a kite’  somehow picked up a negative connotation.   GO SEE Mary Poppins (it’s here for another week…. )  to be swaddled in positivity and bathed in exquisite color, scenery, dance, song, humor, dialogue, choreography, brilliance, and good balance of the sweet but fiesty first-class act of Mary Poppins.
